5 Tips For Being a Great Student
Just do it just do it just Harvard reference just do it
please.
Well look no further because I am uniquely positioned to
give you advice! Not only was I a student not that long ago and a good one I’m
also now a lecturer at a university so I know how the sausage is made. And yes
in this case the sausage is you and I’m gone a turn you into the most darn scholarly
the most academic sausage money can buy! This a in your dads bargain-basement
tips for being a good student! Time management always go to class do the
reading priority your learning... We have done that! There a thousand videos on YouTube with that advice!
This is specific practical actionable advice that everyone should receive! But
before we start- a couple of disclaimers: firstly I am Pakistani.
I was a student in the UK and I am a lecturer at a UK institution that the educational system
that I am familiar with and from time to time I might say something or use a
term that is UK specific. Also I both studied and teach on an arts degree
specifically a Bachelor of the Arts in Film Production. So sometimes it might
feel like I’m speaking more to arts and humanities students than say science students.
Again its because that the scene I am most familiar with. One: Lecturers are
not your enemy you are a team. If your gone a do well in higher education the
first thing you need to do is shake off the shackles of your former oppressors!
In previous full-time education you were most likely trained into a kind of
binary thought system where there is a
good and a bad a right and wrong answer and for a lot of very practical and
understandable reasons teachers were put on a pedestal of authority.
They had to be obeyed they could dole out punishments...
University is nothing like school! It is structured in a fundamentally
different way where you are put in charge of your own learning. We don’t just
teach you facts and quiz you on them we hand you the tools you need to learn
and let you mess around with them. Its chaos! Beautiful chaos! Don’t believe
me? Listen to Einstein...To quote: Two: Understand briefs and marking. At the
start of any unit or module you are most likely given a brief which tells you: the
deliverable the learning outcomes and the marking criteria. Deliverable is
what is expected of you.
The learning outcomes are the things we hope you understand
by the end of the unit. And the marking criteria is how we mark it. It is all there!
Laid out on paper! There no secret bonus
marking sheet that we keep to ourselves and used to trick you. We the staff are
looking at exactly the same thing you are. Were just a bit more familiar with
how to read it. And again-we are not out to get you! If you have trouble
reading or understanding the brief ask us questions and please please do it at the start of the term when we
can help you and not when your about to hand the thing in. Three: Email like a
grownup.
Please email like an adult human being. Email has been
around since before you were born and it is incredibly simple so if you don’t already
take a moment to understand these terms cc aka Carbon Copy this is where you
duplicate an email your sending to any number of other contacts but the
original person or people you are addressing it to remain in the to line in a
lot of situations it implies that the people who are carbon copy dare not
expected to respond or participate in the conversation than just observing or
they need to be kept in the loop BCC aka blind carbon copy that where you do
the same thing except the people do not
turn up on the email they are hidden this is really useful for cases where
people need to be kept in the loop but do not want to share their private
emails or for doing sneaky secret things occasionally its also used when people
do not need to be in the conversation anymore you can BCC them closing out
their part of the conversation and any future reply-all will not contain their email.
And here another tip about writing professional
emails-always include context! Even if its just one line! Especially if you are
starting a new conversation and there are no previous responses to read back.
Assume that the person you are sending an email to is very busy and may not
recall what you were talking about here are a few example phrases: Or...Four:
Qualifying clauses make you better at arguments. This is good advice for anyone
not just students. We all talk to people we all have arguments we have debates
we want to get our opinions across... Qualifying clauses. Beautiful little word
nuggets that go at the beginning of sentences and make what you say better.
They make you seem more wise more worldly its harder to
argue with you they give you an ego boost...They are just fantastic! Here are
some examples Spelling Bee-style in isolation and then used in a sentence: In
my opinion Spider-Man 3 is the best Spider-Man. [applause]I have observed over
the years that dogs can be easily tricked. [applause]And my personal
favourite...Its been my experience that getting popular on YouTube is about
more than just colorful thumbnails. [applause]Go ahead use them on your friends
and family...Watch as their jaws hang open and their eyes bulge wide in awe of
your command of the English language. Five: Understand and use Harvard
Referencing.
Just do it just do it just do it just come on just do it
just Harvard reference just do it please just do it just learn how to do it and
do it just learn how to do it just learn how to do it its how we do it its done
its how we do it its how everyone does it just do it just learn how to do it
just learn just do it please when your planning your time built an extra hour
into every single project to do your bibliography it does not take long but it
probably takes longer than you expect there are also tools and websites like
cite this for me that can speed up the process also understand the difference
between biography reference and an in-text citation they look different and
they serve different purposes in a lot of situations proper referencing and citation can be the difference between
getting busted and kicked out for plagiarism and getting a good grade.
